Disable em-dash autocorrect

I am using Microsoft Word 7.0. When preparing a document I often require a double-em line between words without spaces between the dash and the words. I use Alt, 0151 twice and this produces the required length of dash. However, on typing the space following the succeeding word, the double-em reverts to single-em, which is very irritating. I have tried setting up an AutoCorrect, but this doesn't help.

This appears to be a built-in function of Word. To disable it, you have to select Tools, Options, select the AutoFormat tab and, under 'Replace as you type', deselect the 'Symbol Characters with Symbols' option. However, this may result in the loss of some other automatic replacements that you may have found useful. In that case you will need to add them back by setting up AutoCorrect entries for them.
